I will be offering this plein air class again this year on four Thursday mornings in May. Pack up your supplies – oil pastels, paint sticks, or the medium of your choice – and come work out in the fresh air. In past years we have visited Pony Pasture, the Wetlands, Maymont, and Virginia House. I’m scouting out new possibilities and will let you know where to meet beforehand. DRAWING IN COLOR INTENSIVE – VISARTS
May 21 – 25, 1:00 – 3:30
(registration only through VisArts)
Work with either oil pastel or paint stick or use the two together to make rich, colorful drawings. We will focus on discovering a range of possibilities for these materials and developing a personal approach to using them. Both are easy to clean up and highly portable making them a good choice for summer travels! Tuition information and sign up here.

It’s time again to make plans for the Manakintowne Plein Air Workshop! Jo Pendergraph and I will be offering the fall workshop at the farm at Manakintowne Growers on Saturday, October 7, 9:30 – 3:30. If you have participated before, you already know what a lovely day this is at the farm (or Huguenot Springs for the spring workshop). Spend a restful day working amidst the serene fields and flower beds and break for a delicious farm lunch and good company. This workshop is a great opportunity to try a new medium if you have never picked up oil pastels (all materials are provided) or to practice your plein air skills with oil pastels, oil sticks, oil paint, or the drawing medium of your choice. Spring Plein Air Classes

Enjoy a day in the country working en plein air at historic Huguenot Springs in Powhatan, the sister property of Manakintowne Farm. The site offers beautiful old shade trees and a mature garden filled with peonies and irises. This year in addition to our oil pastel workshop, we are happy to have visiting artist Rudi Winebrenner (a.k.a. Maruta Racenis) joining us for a watercolor workshop. Our day includes a break for Jo’s gourmet farm lunch and leisurely conversation. Workshop descriptions follow; please choose either oil pastel or watercolor at sign up. Experienced students may work in other media (such as oils, acrylic, or soft pastel) as well.
Oil Pastel: Some previous drawing experience is helpful, but experience with oil pastel is not required. All drawing supplies are provided (included in tuition), making this a good opportunity to try out a new medium. Those continuing with oil pastel are welcome to bring their own supplies. For those just beginning in oil pastel, the day begins with a short introduction and demo while continuing students can pick a site and begin working. Individual instruction will be given to all throughout the day.
Watercolor: Open to experienced watercolor students only. Work with watercolor free and loose to capture the beauty of Jo’s spring garden under the guidance of our visiting artist, Rudi Winebrenner. Rudi has taught at the VMFA Studio School, and you probably know her as the former owner of Main Art, our favorite (and sorely missed!) local source for art supplies. Tuition for the day is $115. At sign-up, please specify which medium you want to work with. Please sign up early as space is limited. More information will be sent upon registration.

At the mid-day break, a farm lunch (from the fields!) will be provided along with good company. After lunch, students may begin a new drawing or continue with the morning work. Some drawing experience is helpful, but experience with oil pastel is not required. This is a good opportunity to try a new medium, as all drawing materials are provided. Those already working with oil pastel may want to bring additional supplies, and experienced students may work in their medium of choice. Tuition for the day is $115. Alternative to the Frenzy

If you are weary of the Christmas shopping frenzy or trying to avoid it, this invitation is for you. It is quiet and peaceful in the studio – a welcome alternative shopping experience if you are interested in shopping for original artwork. I am not holding an open studio, but will happily be here by appointment for anyone who wants to stop in. There are drawings (framed and unframed), paintings, collages, monotypes, 3-D pieces, and even clay whistles to have a look at. I’ll brew up some tea or share a glass of wine if you want to come and have a look! If you are interested, get in touch or contact me here and we can set something up.

I will be offering this plein air class again this year on four Thursday mornings in May. Bring your oil pastels and paint sticks down to Pony Pasture Park at the James River. We will have the option of staying at this site for all of the classes or moving to Maymont for part of the session, according to class consensus. Please sign up with me as soon as you can, no later than April 30. If you are new to working outside, I am happy to answer any questions you might have regarding supplies you will need.
